Ingredients

  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (180 g)
  • 2 cups whole milk (480 g)
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (245 g)
  • 2 cups frozen blueberries (280 g)
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup (60 g)
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds (24 g)
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (2 g)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt (1 g)
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds (45 g)

Instructions

  1. Prepare. Whisk milk, yogurt, maple syrup, lemon zest, vanilla and salt in a large bowl. Fold in the rolled oats and chia seeds until every flake is coated. Do not thaw or crush the blueberries; their gradual thaw in the refrigerator releases juice slowly and creates pockets instead of immediately thinning the entire mixture.
  2. Assemble. Spoon half the oat mixture into four 12-ounce jars. Add half the frozen blueberries, then repeat the oat and berry layers. Press only the berries that sit above the rim and leave the remaining layers loose. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours. The berries should remain distributed rather than collecting as one frozen block at the bottom.
  3. Cook or chill. Stir one chilled jar twice from bottom to top. The oats should be softly thickened, with natural purple trails and no pool of berry liquid beneath them. If the mixture feels too firm, add 1 tablespoon milk. Avoid vigorous stirring, which breaks every berry and makes the jar uniformly purple instead of leaving juicy pockets.
  4. Finish. Top each jar with sliced almonds immediately before serving. The crisp nuts contrast with the hydrated oats and should not spend the night in the jar. For Tuesday transport, tighten the lid and carry the almonds separately. These oats are designed to be eaten cold, but the topping plan keeps them practical even when breakfast waits at a desk.

Notes

  • Use the clear lidded breakfast jar and preserve the weights. Center cue: the oats after eight hours, softly thickened with purple berry trails but no liquid pool at the bottom.
  • Refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat one portion for 45 seconds, check the center and add brief bursts if needed.
